agent provocateur

   (ah-zhanh pro-vok-ah-TEUR) [French: instigator] A paid undercover agent who abets activities directed against the state or against society, or one who incites people under suspicion to commit illegal acts that result in their downfall or punishment.
   The novel follows the misfortunes of a doubledealing agent provocateur in the former Soviet Union.
